| | | | | | | | The Manuscript Development Process | |
To help assure the most successful and user-friendly final text, your manuscript will undergo a development review by an independent industry representative appropriate to your topic. The reviewer will look at your manuscript for issues of acceptable content, organization, and reliability. These reviews are generally very helpful, as they can provide the author with ideas for content additions or different perspectives that will make the book most helpful to the end-users.
In order to make the best use of these reviews, it is especially important that authors submit their manuscripts according to the development schedule. By submitting chapter clusters for review early in the process, the author can receive helpful information that can be applied to later chapters, reducing the potential need for rewrites after the manuscript is completed.
Here is a sample of the questions reviewers are asked to consider when reading your manuscript.
Development Review Guidelines
Subject Content and Coverage
1. Is the subject of this proposal important and timely? Is it presented in a fair, unbiased manner?
2. Is the table of contents logically organized? Could the order of presentation of topics be improved? If so, how?
3. Are all key topics included and given adequate coverage for the book's intended presentation? Has undue emphasis been given to some topics?
4. Can you suggest added (or deleted) topics that might make the book more useful?
Subject Presentation
5. What specifically are the proposal's strengths? Weaknesses?
6. Are the writing style and level of presentation of this proposal appropriate for the intended audience?
7. Does the same material read well? Is it easy to understand with each topic logically leading into the next?
8. Does the material appear to be original? Is any borrowed information given proper credit?
9. If illustrations or examples are included, how would you rate them? Do they reinforce the key points and concepts? Are other illustrations needed?
Please include any additional comments and recommendations that you may have.
