Description

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are transforming the way petroleum professionals approach exploration, production, transportation, and sales. From prospecting new wells to refining logistics at the gas pump, GIS technology connects spatial data with operational insights to drive smarter, faster, and more cost-effective decisions.

Introduction to GIS for the Petroleum Industry is your practical guide to understanding and applying GIS in real-world petroleum operations. Written in clear, nontechnical language, this book helps professionals at all levels harness the power of spatial analysis—without needing a background in GIS.

Features & Benefits

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Learn how GIS applies across upstream, midstream, and downstream operations.
  • Real-World Applications: Case studies show how GIS enhances site selection, market analysis, and cross-functional communication.
  • Cost-Saving Strategies: Discover how GIS reduces redundancy, streamlines data management, and supports automation.
  • Visual Decision-Making: Leverage cartography, remote sensing, and GPS for enhanced data interpretation and presentation.
  • Beginner-Friendly: No technical background required—ideal for those new to GIS or looking to expand their knowledge.
  • Enhanced Profitability: Use GIS to address key business questions in drilling, logistics, and sales with spatial insight.

About the Author

Dean Gaddy is currently the Senior Service Manager – Field Services and Technical Advising where he manages global technical engineering and field service support for ESP operations with a main focus of finding ways to reduce NPT in our operations and improving procedures and processes for safer, more efficient operations. Gaddy earned his MBA in Technology Management from the University of Phoenix and his BA in Earth Sciences-Geology from University of Northern Colorado (Greeley) where he received The Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists? Neal J. Harr Memorial Outstanding Student Award. Prior to working for Devon, Gaddy was Senior Editor of Drilling and Special Projects for Oil & Gas Journal where he wrote extensively about GIS. In the early 1990s, Gaddy became "unknowingly" involved with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) while working as a consultant for Unocal. During this time, the company performed geospatial analysis with a proprietary mainframe program used for wellsite selection and geologic mapping. He is a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (1985) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (1997).
