Description

Geostatistics is an increasingly important tool for developing an integrated reservoir description. Though Applied Geostatistics for Reservoir Characterization is written to illustrate the importance of geostatistics in improving the reservoir characterization process, it does not require any prior knowledge of statistics or advanced mathematics. Emphasis is placed on intuitive understanding of procedure rather than on mathematical details. Each chapter has an associated appendix in which additional mathematical details are provided. Several numerical and field examples, as well as a large number of illustrations, are provided to explain the strengths and weaknesses of different methods.

About the Author

Mohan Kelkar is a professor of petroleum engineering at the U. of Tulsa. After receiving a BS degree in chemical engineering from the U. of Bombay and an MS degree in petroleum engineering and PhD degree in chemical engineering from the U. of Pittsburgh, he joined the U. of Tulsa as an assistant professor in 1983. His primary research interests are developing tools for integrated reservoir description and applying them to field studies. He has received funding from government agencies and international oil companies to conduct his research. He currently teaches a geostatistics course at the U. of Tulsa and for many oil companies around the world. Kelkar was a faculty adviser for the SPE Student Chapter at the U. of Tulsa for 5 years. He has served on the SPE Education and Accreditation Committee and has been a Review Chairman for SPE Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering.

Godofredo Perez works for BP Indonesia in Jakarta as a staff reservoir engineer. He is involved in field development planning and reservoir modeling. Previously, he worked for Arco Exploration and Production Technology in Plano, Texas, as a principal research engineer. At Arco, he worked in several integrated reservoir-modeling projects and conducted research on geostatistics, integration of seismic data in reservoir models, scaleup, and effect of heterogeneities on gas injection. He also taught internal geostatistics courses. Perez holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees in petroleum engineering from the U. of Tulsa. In 2001, he served as the Program Vice-Chairman for the Indonesian SPE section.
